Enzymes are proteins that act as catalyst, and that have been used safely for decades in various applications ranging from detergents to food production. However, their proteinaceous nature may - if exposure is sufficiently high - cause respiratory sensitization by inhalation, which later on may trigger allergy manifesting symptoms that may impact life quality.
Research has shown that sensitization among workers and downstream users can be avoided by supplying low dusting enzyme products, in combination with safe process designs and adequate training of workers handling enzyme products.
AMFEP members are dedicated to enhancing the safety of enzyme products and minimizing the risk of inhalation-related sensitization. To continue to push this forward, AMFEP developed a document providing guidance for evaluating and mitigating the risk of dust exposure from solid enzyme products, along with supportive materials.
AMFEP also developed a series of webinars to present the Guidance on the Dustiness of Solid Enzyme Products. The webinars took place in June and September 2025, and the recordings are available.
